Holiday Gift Ideas - Back to Basics Series

Although I typically prefer experiences over gifts, that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy giving them. My daughter has titled me The Best Gift Giver Ever. However this title comes with the pressure of figuring out the best option for each person and then bringing it one step further for the personal touch and extra thoughtfulness. Truly tapping into what someone might really want or need or even selecting a gift that's completely creative is certainly a specialty.

Here are a few ideas to try, that might work

for just about any personality, for those who have everything,

or those that are just plain hard to buy for....

Box of Tea

Hot tea

Now I don't mean just any ol' box with teas in it.... Let's talk how to spruce it up. How to make it personal, and what will show your thought, time and effort. Let the person you're giving it to, know that you care.

Head to a local specialty tea shop. These shops usually have an array of loose tea options. And they usually provide a variety of flavors to select from, allowing you to choose what you believe is best for each of your favorite people. Loose tea also adds a very festive look.

Now to be creative... you can leave the tea in the bags that they come in or you can re-bag for aesthetics. I left the one pictured below in it's original bag. It's a clear, see thru bag and shows off the tea perfectly. Let's tag it...There are several ideas for tagging. I look for interesting tips, history or health facts online and type them up for printing. Then hole punch and ribbon tie them on. I added a small jar of honey, specialty caramel sugar and a mug for something extra for the box. You might try swapping the mug for a tea kettle that steeps loose tea or a fancy infuser. Or keep it simple with just tea. This is a great easy gift idea that works for most anyone.

Let's take this same idea with a twist....

You can choose favorite beers. Buy a few different options and create a mixed boxed of samples to try. There are a few stores that sell single beers to create a mixed sample of choices for tasting. This also works with wine, whiskey, coffees and more. Of course you can add a beer mug, wine glasses, shot glasses or large ice cube molds for a little something extra to add.

Salad Bowl

A close friend of mine crafted one of the most creative gifts for me. She ordered a large ceramic bowl with a personalized label, filled it with crumpled dollar bills, some green and red tissue paper, and tied it all together with wooden spoons. It was undoubtedly the most charming gift to receive.

This reinforces my earlier point that taking an extra step makes a gift particularly special and memorable. Even years later, I still use this bowl frequently, especially when I host a party!

Money Wreath

When you just can't think of anything better - Money always works. However, even money can be given with extra savviness. My mom once gave me a wreath wrapped in money.... Yes it's true. Roll each dollar bill and tie each to a Styrofoam craft wreath...Voila...you have a gift that certainly works for anyone and now has some character and thought.
