Hosting a Holiday Party? Easy Tips and Tricks to make the best impression - Back to Basics Series

Updated: Dec 11

I adore hosting events and could certainly be humbly considered the ultimate hostess. I truly love to go the extra step into planning, decorating, the food choices, games perhaps. Are you planning a party or gathering for the holidays? Expecting guests from out of town? Here are some ideas to make your party unforgettable.

First, how many guests are coming?...It's always wise to anticipate for a few more depending on the type of party. Let's talk seating. Sometimes this takes a new arrangement for best conversations to be had or adding a few more options so everyone is comfortable. And then there's the music.... Tap into the soul of what brings the whole thing together. You can use radio stations or create your own list of songs for any event.

Most importantly, Food. Besides socializing, food is the main attraction and what we want to leave a lasting impression. I find that choosing lots of tasty finger foods is always a big hit. But this doesn't mean grab the pre-made platter. Let's be honest they are never as good as creating your very own fresh dish.

Charcuterie

Charcuterie is always a success. Choose your favorites, from grapes, strawberries, pepperoni, salami, cheeses, crackers and more, but remember this is the perfect time to consider trying something new. Experiment with a different cheese or jam etc. I recently tried fig jam, and it was a big hit on crackers and on the brie—everyone loved it.

Here are some other food suggestions that are guaranteed to be popular.

Homemade Bruschetta

Bruschetta is super easy to make and has few ingredients.

Diced cherry tomatoes, diced onion, fresh cut basil, fresh garlic, a little extra virgin olive oil, your favorite balsamic vinegar, and a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Don't forget the fresh made bakery bread. You can't go wrong with bakery bread... It's a real treat every time!

Homemade Cupcakes

You don't have to be a chef to make and decorate a batch of cupcakes. Find your favorite recipe. Try the mini options. Not only will you have more of them, it won't be as filling since there are so many other choices to pick from. It's a great bite size sweet treat. I use whip cream for frosting since it's a little lighter. Just whip, heavy whipping cream with 2 Tablespoons of sugar and a Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract. Then use various toppings for a festive look.

Drink Station

A drink station gathers everything in one place and displays all the options. You might consider having a separate one for adults and another kid-friendly version if necessary. Don't forget to experiment with something new. I bought mini plastic shot glasses, added a cute note to encourage guests to sample new drinks.

Another trick to try.... Tie each wine glass with a different ribbon to personalize who's glass is who's... This beats the sharpie on the plastic cup.

Make a Spiced Apple Cider

My family claims to like hot cocoa more but this is certainly a fun favorite also

Games

Oh, the fun part of any gathering or social event is undoubtedly the moment when everyone comes together to engage in a game. There's something truly magical about the atmosphere that shifts when a group joins together to play a game. The anticipation builds as players gather around, laughter and chatter, creating an infectious energy that elevates the entire experience.

When you bring people together for a game, whether it’s a board game, card game, or some other type of game, the dynamics of the room change dramatically. The initial conversations may revolve around casual topics, but as soon as the game begins, the focus sharpens, and everyone becomes fully immersed in the activity. The shared goal of competition, teamwork, or simply having fun fosters a sense of camaraderie among participants. I also have a few prizes or gifts for the winners. Gifts

Give out a take-home gift to express gratitude to your guests for coming. There are numerous items that are simple to purchase or create. What is your specialty? I prepare a homemade caramel sauce for fruit dipping or caramel popcorn. I have family and friends that who look forward to attending just for the caramel. Spruce it up to make it special with a printed note. See more on Gifts https://www.inspiredspacesbytherase.com/post/holiday-gift-ideas-back-to-basics-series
